The Retail Hyper Relevance Summit 2026: Where Purpose Becomes Advantage
Global marketplaces such as Temu, Amazon and Shein have fundamentally altered consumer expectations around price, assortment and speed. Competing head-on is an increasingly unwinnable ‘race to the bottom’ for most domestic retailers.
Yet a growing movement of retail leaders argue that the answer lies elsewhere.
The Hyper-Relevance Summit, founded by NORA and social impact entrepreneur Jeremy Meltzer, explores a different question: What makes a retailer matter? How can our industry become hyper-relevant and therefore hyper-competitive, at this pivotal time?
This summit examines how retailers can build relevance, be truly customer centric – and in turn drive growth – using purpose and impact to build a competitive moat.
The premise is simple. Consumers can buy almost anything from anywhere at any time. The retailers that thrive will not necessarily be the cheapest. They will be the most meaningful.
In an age of algorithmic abundance, creating an authentic connection to consumers grounded in social or environmental impact may become retail’s most valuable currency, and mitigate the expense of performance marketing and promotions.
This summit connects leaders from across Australian retail, to explore how purpose can move beyond marketing rhetoric, to become a practical and valuable competitive advantage. Speakers also include senior leaders from the NGO and business-for-purpose sector.
The challenge is significant. Purpose without commercial discipline becomes theatre. But commercial success without purpose is increasingly short-lived. The retailers that thrive will be those that combine both. Given our social and environmental challenges, consumers already expect retailers to be ‘part of the solution’ – and are backing brands that reflect their values.
Where is all this heading – and what is the larger opportunity?
The Hyper-Relevance Summit arrives at a moment when Australian retail faces profound structural change. The question is timely: when everyone can compete on price, what remains worth competing for – and fighting for – so Australian retail thrives?”
